The First World War helped to make the peoples of Australia, Ireland, India and Scotland more keen on independence.

In the First World War, the mortality rate for the British Army was 12 per cent.

But for Scottish troops the mortality rate was 26 per cent.

In 1913, in the UK House of Commons, a bill to give Scotland independence passed its second reading.

But it got no further than that.

In 1919, a Scottish trade union opposed the abolition of rent restrictions and wage controls.

It organised a 40 hour strike.

The London government sent 12,000 troops, six tanks and lots of machine-guns to Glasgow.

In 1920, in Ireland, London government security agents called the Cairo Gang were killing civilians.

The London government's secret agents fired into a crowd at a Dublin football match, killing 14 people.

In 1919, in India, the British military massacred around 1,000 non-violent protesters at Amritser.

Glasgow housing

The London government allowed Scotland's industries - shipbuilding, textiles, steel and heavy engineering - to wither and die.

After World War I, unemployment remained much higher in Scotland than in England.

CAPITALS MUST BE STRIPPED OF POWER

 

Why do voters get fed up with Washington, London, Brussels, Edinburgh, Bangkok, Delhi, Beijing...?

In a letter to the Financial Times, James Hanshaw writes about "the unchecked, seemingly uncontrollable, shift of wealth, power and influence" to the capital city.

James Henshaw refers to the Margaret Thatcher era in the UK in the 1980s when "more and more responsibilities were sucked away from regional and local councils to be handled by elites in London..."

The posh parts of capital city get the nation's money and the nation's big infrastructure projects.



James Henshaw relates that Scotland is "not the only part of the kingdom to want more control of its own destiny; much of England’s north and west wants that too...



James Henshaw relates:

"A successful union presupposes fairness and balance and the UK has become totally out of balance and is in danger of becoming little more than a city state called London."

James Hanshaw is writing from Switzerland where (1) the government in the capital has very limited powers and (2) where each small county has large powers.
