Retired Army Chief General Tyasno Sudarto, who is a Christian, is one of those supporting the Islamist groups.
In 1981 five members of Komando Jihad hijacked a Garuda flight and took it and its 57 passengers to Bangkok. This was a false flag operation. The forerunner of al Qaeda, which was founded around 1988, could be said to be Indonesia's Komando Jihad, which was founded around 1968.
According to Kingsbury, Komando Jihad, which became Jemaah Islamiah, was set up by the American-trained generals.

Indonesia's largest Muslim group, Nahdlatul Ulama, has described gay lifestyles as perverted and a desecration of human dignity.
In the 1960's, it was the Nahdlatul Ulama which worked for the CIA and helped to murder up to one million alleged opponents of US imperialism.
Former President Wahid, an apparent moderate, was once the boss of Nahdlatul Ulama and he was also a close friend of Israel.
The sexual habits of the Indonesians are determined by the various religious beliefs that have existed in the country over the years:
1. Animism (hyang) sees sex as both sacred and fun. Male shamans are often gay.
2. Hinduism, which came to Indonesia 2,000 years ago, has a bisexual tradition.
The erotic dancing, both male and female, found throughout much of Indonesia, has links to Hinduism.
Arisan! An Indonesian film featuring gay kissing became a box office hit in Indonesia, the world's most populous Muslim country. Playing to packed cinemas in Jakarta, "Arisan!" is all about homosexuality.
3. Buddhism, which existed in Indonesia at the same time as Hinduism, taught moderation in sexual matters.
Indonesians adopted both Hindu and Buddhist ideas, and combined them with animist ideas.
The Buddhist idea of moderation has a firm grip on Indonesians.

4. A very moderate form of Islam came to Indonesia in the 13th century, but Islam did not become the main religion until the 16th century.
These moderate Moslems are bisexual.

5. Christianity replaced animism in the eastern islands in the 17th and 18th centuries.
The Dutch, who ran Indonesia as a colony, included homophobic Calvinists.
In Holland, in the 17th century, the Calvinists beheaded lots of gay people.
Back in the 1990s, the Indonesians did not have a word for 'gay' or 'homosexual'. Thus, there could be little in the way of homophobia.
Indonesians are naturally bisexual.
This does not mean that they go in for much in the way of deeply intimate gay sex.
It simply means that the boys usually go around with the boys and the girls usually go around with the girls.
In Indonesia Gay sexual intercourse is reportedly relatively rare.
But you may see an Indonesian policeman sitting on another policeman's lap.
