Witnesses said Bouhlel (or his Mossad double) first crashed into crowds near the five-star Hotel Negresco, then rolled slowly down an otherwise empty road chased by police on foot and, possibly, one on a motorcycle.
On 24 March 2016, the truck driver, Mohamed Lahouaiej Bouhlel, was given a six months suspended prison sentence for armed assault (an altercation following an accident traffic, committed with an improvised weapon, namely a pallet) carried out in January 2016.
"It is not clear how the truck was able to breach the barriers to the promenade closed for pedestrians and spectators during the 14th of July celebration.
"How is it possible that such a crowd is not ‘protected’ by patrolling police and military? And that in a country under effective Martial Law?"
French television station BFM TV reported that he was a divorced father of three.
